“Is there any other fitting room?”
Joe looked up. She was a pretty lady. A bit agitated. Joe glanced behind her and saw the reason for her agitation. A small boy, about 7 years old.
“Can we go now?”
The lady sighed and implored Joe with her eyes.
“Please. I just need to try this one dress.”
Joe looked around. There really was nothing he could do for her. The line for the fitting rooms was a mile long.
“What about the one in the back?”
Joe turned around. His supervisor appeared out of nowhere and suggested the mobile fitting room in the storage area.
“Great! Would you mind taking me there?”
The supervisor nodded and signaled for Joe to go. Joe sighed under his breath and led the way.
“Anything for a looker…”
“I’m sorry?”
Joe’s eyes went wide as he realized he had spoken out loud.
“Nothing, ma’am,” Joe said. “Here we are.”
He held the door open for her and smiled. As soon as she disappeared inside, his smile faded and he cursed his supervisor for his philandering mind. Just as he was about to kick a box, he realized that the lady’s kid was staring at him. Joe flashed him his trademarked dazzling smile.
The kid remained stoic.
Just as Joe attempted to talk to the kid, there was a bump behind him. Joe turned around. Another bump. ”Ma’am?”
There was a voice but it’s inaudible.
“Excuse me?”
Another bump.
“Is everything okay?”
Joe could hear sounds of a struggle. He was scared out of his mind but he still reached for the door handle. Suddenly, something grabbed his left leg. His heart skipped a beat.
He calmed down when he saw it was just the kid. His face was paler than usual.
Joe turned around and almost bumped into the lady. His heart skipped several beats this time.
There was something different about her.
